Horse Reins - FAQs

Why use Horse Reins?

Reins are essential for communicating the aids from the rider's hands to the bit. Reins are held in the rider’s hands and attached to the bit rings with either a buckle or billet attachment. They are strong but slim pieces of leather that connect the horse’s mouth to the rider’s hands.

What Reins do you need for your horse?

You will need a slim, continuous curb rein for a curb bit. Otherwise, you can choose reins according to the rider’s preference for width and grip. Continental and laced reins have visible tracks for the rider’s hand. Rubber and Kris Extreme reins have grippy material. This stops the rider's hands from slipping, even in wet weather.

What are LeMieux Reins' benefits?

LeMieux makes reins from the highest quality materials. This ensures superior performance in all weather conditions. LeMieux’s high manufacturing standards mean our reins are reliable, strong, and stylish. Most LeMieux reins come with distinctive leather martingale stoppers. Stoppers prevent bib and running martingale rings from touching the bit.

How should you look after LeMieux Reins?

Off the horse, you can leave reins attached to the bit at most times. Detach when deep cleaning the bridle or soaking the bit. After daily use, clean the leather parts of LeMieux reins with a damp cloth or sponge and saddle soap. Air dry and treat with a quality leather balm. Ensure reins don’t get tangled by looping into the throat lash when storing your bridle.

How often should you replace Horse Reins?

LeMieux makes reins with high-quality durable materials. Still, horse reins can become worn over time by repeated actions of the rider’s hands. This can affect grip, so use your judgement and replace reins when needed. For your safety, always check the leather at the bit ends of the reins for splits and cracks before use.
