Helmet Safety Standards Explained

The standards shown on the helmet label tell you which types of riding accident scenarios your helmet has been tested for.

What is EN1384:2003?

The latest European standard for equestrian helmets. Tests for impact, penetration, retention, and stability.

What is ASTM F1163-23?

The American safety standard for equestrian helmets. Certification is managed by SEI.

What is ISO 9001?

A company accreditation that is the world’s leading standard for quality management systems. It helps organisations to consistently deliver products and services that meet customer legal requirements while driving continuous improvement.

What is a CE Mark?

All helmets sold in Europe must legally carry the CE mark, which confirms conformity with EU regulations. It is not a performance test, but a mandatory compliance mark.

What is BSI (British Standards Institution)?

Independent body that tests helmets. When a helmet has the BSI Kitemark, it means every production batch is checked and audited.

What is a Kitemark ?

The BSI Kitemark is a trusted UK quality mark from the British Standards Institution. When you see the Kitemark on a helmet, it means:

  •  - The helmet has been tested to the relevant safety standard (e.g. EN 1384:2023).

  •  - Every production batch is also independently checked and audited by BSI.

  •  - It’s proof of ongoing, consistent safety and quality, not just a one-time test

What is SEI (Safety Equipment Institute)?

US organisation that certifies helmets to the ASTM standard. The SEI Mark comes from the Safety Equipment Institute in the USA. On a helmet, it means:

 - The helmet has been independently tested and certified to the ASTM F1163 equestrian standard.

 - Factories and processes are also subject to regular audits.

 - It’s the US equivalent of the Kitemark, showing the helmet is compliant and safe for the American market.

Verv® Helmet FAQs

Which safety standards do your helmets meet, and for which regions?

Our helmets are EN 1384:2023 and ASTM F1163-23 certified, carrying both the BSI Kitemark and SEI marks for UK, EU, and US recognition.

The Verv® helmet meets BSI and SEI impact standards with or without the panel. After any impact, both the helmet and panel must be replaced.

Do your helmets cover safety in all disciplines and all regions?

Yes — LeMieux helmets meet the latest global standards: EN 1384:2023 (UK/EU) and ASTM F1163-23 (US). They carry both the BSI Kitemark and SEI mark, confirming independent batch testing and ASTM compliance. This combination makes them accepted for all major disciplines* so your helmet is approved whether you ride in the UK, Europe, or the US (*subject to competition rules and always check regularly)

What if I land on the peak in a fall?

The nylon peak is designed to flex under impact, helping to absorb energy rather than crack or shatter. Its paint finish is engineered to move with the material, maintaining durability. If the peak releases, the helmet still meets full BSI and SEI safety standards without it. As with any helmet, both the helmet and peak should be replaced after an impact.

Can I swap peaks after my helmet has been tagged for a competition?

In some organisations, such as the Pony Club, specific rules apply—for example, requiring skull caps without fixed peaks for cross-country. Once your helmet has been tagged, it must remain exactly as it was checked; changing components like the peak on your Verv helmet could make it non-compliant. Always wear your helmet in the same configuration it was tagged for the discipline you are competing in.

How do I fit the LeMieux Verv® Helmet peak or brim?

Step-by-step:

  1. Align – Hold the peak/brim to the helmet until the magnets guide it into place.
  2. Engage – Press firmly so the snap-fits lock into the baskets.
  3. Check – Ensure it sits flush with no gaps.
  4. Test – Give a gentle tug to confirm it’s secure before riding.

How do I fit the LeMieux Verv® Helmet panel?

Verv® top panels are magnetic. Lift from the rear to remove, then align the front edge to click it back into place. Always check it’s secure before use.

How does the ventilation work?

Our helmets use six large crown vents to reduce heat stress. They’re engineered to maximise airflow while still meeting all penetration and impact requirements, providing cooling without compromising safety

How do I care for my helmet?

Check out our care guide video HERE

Your helmet should be cared for like your own head. Each comes with a protective bag, and using a LeMieux Hat Box helps prevent knocks and scratches. The finishes use automotive-grade, UV- and abrasion-tested coatings for long-term durability.

The central padding is removable and can be machine washed at 30°C.

How to return a helmet?

We want you to be fully happy with the fit. Unworn helmets can be returned or exchanged as long as the safety tag is still attached. Try it on carefully (ideally with a LeMieux preferred retailer), and if it’s not right, return it in the original packaging with proper padding. For safety and hygiene reasons, helmets used for riding can’t be accepted. Professional in-store fitting is always the best option.

How do I adjust the fit of my LeMieux helmet?

Check out our fitting videos HERE

Use the 360° Wrap Fit control wheel at the back. Turn clockwise to tighten, counterclockwise to loosen. Add the 5mm or 10mm padded ‘donuts’ inside the helmet to fine-tune the fit.

When should I replace my LeMieux helmet?

Replace your helmet every 3 to 5 years, or if it has been involved in an impact, even if no visible damage is seen. Replace the helmet if it no longer fits correctly.
