Horse Studs - FAQs

Why use Horse Studs?

Horse studs screw into specially-made threaded holes in your horse’s hind shoes. Your farrier can create these holes for you. Screw horse studs in to provide extra grip in deep going and wet, slippery conditions. This can give a competition horse the edge for racing, hunting, point-to-point, or XC work. Horse studs are a temporary solution to prevent slipping. You should remove them when not in use. Ironically, they can cause slipping on hard surfaces e.g. roads.

What Studs do you need for your horse?

You need fine quality, deep-threaded studs such as the Dome Studs supplied by LeMieux. When your studs are not in use, plug the holes with rubber bungs to prevent them from getting clogged. You can clear out and re-thread stud holes with a stud tap. These accessories are all available from LeMieux.

What are LeMieux Studs' benefits?

LeMieux studs are excellent quality, ideal for deep going and hind use. The hardened stainless steel material is state of the art. Strong and rust-proof, they are ideal for competition use. They are available in three different sizes. Choose your size according to your horse’s shoes and the kind of activity you will use them for.

How should you look after LeMieux Studs?

Screw studs in full, taking care not to thread the screw. Remove with care and rinse clean. When not in use, store LeMieux studs with care. They are small and easy to lose! A zipped compartment on a LeMieux grooming or kit bag is ideal for storing studs. Plug your horse’s stud holes with Stud Plugz to stop them from filling with debris.

How often should you replace Horse Studs?

Replace horse studs if the screw becomes threaded or if they become worn through use. The most likely fate for a tiny little horse stud is getting lost. The chances are, they will outlast your ability to keep track of them! Replace them as and when needed according to your judgment.
